Rory Finneran Joins Republic of Ireland Squad for Friendly

Rory Finneran has taken the first major step into senior international football.

The 18-year-old Newcastle United midfielder has been drafted into the Republic of Ireland squad for the friendly against Grenada on Saturday, joining Heimir Hallgrimsson’s group at their training camp in Murcia, Spain.

For a player who only moved to Newcastle from Blackburn Rovers in 2024, the rise has been sharp. Finneran has already come through Ireland’s youth ranks at under-17 and under-19 level; now he finds himself in the senior setup, preparing for a 17:00 BST kick-off at the Estadio Nueva Condomina.

This wasn’t a call-up mapped out months in advance. It arrived through the bumps and bruises of international football.

Cardiff City defender Joel Bagan and Ipswich Town winger Kasey McAteer have both withdrawn after being ruled out with injuries, opening the door for Finneran to be promoted into the squad. The reshuffle didn’t end there.

Benfica attacker Jaden Umeh, who had been handed his first senior call-up, has been pulled out of the camp by his club. Because the game falls outside Fifa’s international window, clubs are under no obligation to release their players, and Benfica have chosen to keep hold of one of their brightest young forwards.

Their under-19 side faces a must-win clash with Famalicao on Saturday as they chase qualification for the Uefa Youth League. Umeh, who scored twice in a 6-2 win over UD Leiria on Sunday, is central to those plans.

“Benfica are still fighting in their U19s to be in the Uefa Youth League,” Hallgrimsson said. “The plan was for them to have secured that by now, but unfortunately, results this weekend didn't go their way, so Jaden still has one more game to play.

“We knew beforehand that this was a possibility, even if it was unlikely. It is unlucky for him that the results went that way, as we were looking forward to working with him, but we understand the club's position and will have to wait for a future window to bring him into the environment.”

So one opportunity pauses. Another begins.

While Umeh waits for his senior debut to be rescheduled, Finneran walks into a camp that suddenly has room for a fresh midfield option and a teenager eager to show he belongs at this level. For Hallgrimsson, a friendly outside the rigid Fifa calendar brings complications, but it also offers something every international manager craves: a clear look at the next wave.
