Kylian Mbappé's Future at Real Madrid: A Crisis Unfolds

Kylian Mbappé was supposed to be the final flourish on Florentino Pérez’s latest galáctico canvas. Instead, barely two seasons into his Real Madrid adventure, the conversation around him has twisted into something the club never planned for: what would it actually take to move him on?

The short answer: an eye-watering amount of money, and a crisis far worse than the one already unfolding.

“It would require a significant sum for Real to consider selling him this summer,” Wilson said. “Real Madrid may expect a fee in excess of what Paris Saint-Germain paid to sign Neymar from Barcelona, in fact, and set a new world record fee.”

Then come the wages. Mbappé’s salary level, combined with bonuses and commercial clauses, turns the entire package into something only a handful of entities on the planet could even contemplate.

Once everything is factored in, Wilson estimates a total transfer operation “worth more than €350 million ($411.9 million) at the low end.” That kind of number strips the field of suitors almost instantly. European giants might dream. Only state-backed projects can realistically act.

Which is why one destination looms over the rest.

His commercial pull places him in the rarest of company. Lionel Messi. Cristiano Ronaldo. That’s the bracket Wilson uses to explain the scale of Mbappé’s appeal.

“His brand value off-the-pitch changes the dynamic of any transfer bid into something that has value away from the game too, like with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo,” Wilson said.

Mbappé is not just a goalscorer; he is, in Wilson’s words, “a kind of global luxury athlete brand” with heavyweight sponsors such as Nike and EA Sports and a crossover reach only a few footballers in history have enjoyed.

That is exactly the profile Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund has been targeting. The country’s football project is not just about winning domestic titles. It is about visibility, soft power and a long build-up to the 2034 World Cup.

For them, Mbappé is not a €350 million indulgence. He is an asset that could reshape how the league is perceived worldwide.

Wilson also points to how Mbappé’s existing ties and appeal in Africa and especially North Africa could dovetail with a move to the Middle East, creating what he calls a “realignment” of his brand with the region. PSG rode that wave once. Real Madrid are doing so now. A Saudi club, backed by PIF, would see an opportunity to take it further.

If any market is built to smash records for a player of this profile, it is Saudi Arabia.

A Project Turning Sour in Madrid

All of this might have remained theoretical had the sporting project matched the hype. It has not.

Mbappé was supposed to elevate Real Madrid’s aura, to sit alongside Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham as the front-facing stars of a new era. Instead, the tactical jigsaw has looked awkward, the chemistry uncertain, and the trophy cabinet quiet. Two seasons without a major trophy is an eternity at this club.

What began as tactical debate has morphed into something more damaging: a full-blown public relations crisis.

The imbalances on the pitch have fed a narrative that the Mbappé project has distorted the team’s shape and hierarchy. Online, that frustration has exploded. A digital petition calling for the 27-year-old’s departure has reportedly surged past 70 million signatures, a staggering symbol of how quickly opinion has curdled.

Wilson highlights the danger of that shift. “Thirdly there is that political angle and if fans start seeing him as a bit of a disruptive force, a player who thinks he's bigger than the club, then the pressure on him and the management can turn toxic very quickly,” he warned.

The toxicity is no longer hypothetical. It is visible, measurable, and growing.
