Barcelona Extends Hansi Flick's Contract Until 2028
Barcelona have moved to lock in their architect on the touchline. According to Mundo Deportivo, the club and Hansi Flick, represented by agent Pini Zahavi, have reached a full agreement on a contract extension that rewards the German’s impact and ties him even more tightly to the Blaugrana’s long-term project.
Fresh from defending their La Liga title, Barcelona have decided stability is non-negotiable. Flick’s previous deal ran to 2027; the new agreement stretches that commitment to June 2028, with an additional optional year linked to specific performance targets that could carry the partnership through to 2029. For a club that has lurched between projects in recent seasons, this is a clear statement: Flick is the man they are building around.
A smooth deal built on trust
The breakthrough came after a series of high-level meetings in Barcelona, with Zahavi sitting down with the club’s hierarchy to close the deal. Zahavi, a long-time close friend of president Joan Laporta, met sporting director Deco to pin down the financial framework and sporting guarantees around the extension.
Those talks did not drag. The understanding between all parties, both personal and professional, turned what could have been a complex negotiation into a straightforward process. Barcelona had been working on this plan since April, having already identified Flick as the coach to steer the first two years of Laporta’s new mandate, which officially begins on July 1.
For the board, tying Flick to that political and sporting cycle is crucial. The club views the continuity on the bench as a pillar for its next phase of growth, on and off the pitch.
Backing from the dressing room to the boardroom
The direction of travel had been obvious for weeks. Interim president Rafa Yuste had all but confirmed that a renewal was on the way during the club’s recent title celebrations, publicly backing Flick and highlighting how seamlessly he has slotted into life in Catalonia.
“The renewal will be very simple. The people saw that he is very happy in Barcelona. He has adapted very well to the club. We just need to close some details, but when Deco and he want it, we will make it public,” Yuste said.
That sentiment mirrors the feeling around the training ground. Flick’s methods, honed at Bayern Munich and with the German national team, have meshed with Barcelona’s identity rather than clashing with it. The extension underlines that the club believes this is not a short-term bounce, but the foundation of a new era.
Business first, headlines later
For now, though, Barcelona are keeping the agreement under wraps. Flick’s focus is fixed on the final stretch of the season, and the club is prepared to wait before making the deal official.
There is still a target on the horizon: 100 points and 100 goals in La Liga. Barcelona sit on 91 points and 91 goals with three games left against Alaves, Real Betis and Valencia. It is a demanding objective, but exactly the kind of internal standard Flick has brought with him.
Only once this campaign is wrapped up will the cameras and microphones turn fully to the future. When they do, they will find a club that has made its choice on the most important position of all — and a coach whose project now has the time and authority to shape what Barcelona want to be over the rest of the decade.
